How to Prepare Your Artwork for Commercial Printing

Sending print-ready artwork saves time, avoids costly reprints, and ensures your final product matches your vision. Here is what you need to know.

File Format

Print-ready PDF is the universal standard. Export from your design tool (InDesign, Illustrator, Canva) using the "Press Quality" or "High Quality Print" preset.

Resolution

All images must be 300 DPI at final print size. A common mistake is using 72 DPI web images — they look fine on screen but print blurry. If you are unsure, print your image at actual size on a home printer first.

Color Mode

Always use CMYK color mode. RGB looks vibrant on screen but produces unexpected results in print. Convert all images and design elements to CMYK before exporting.

Bleed and Safe Margins

Add 3mm bleed on all sides — artwork extends 3mm beyond the trim line. Keep all critical text and logos at least 5mm inside the trim line. This accounts for the slight variation in cutting.

Font Handling

Embed all fonts in your PDF, or convert text to outlines. Missing fonts are the number one cause of file rejection at prepress.

Common Mistakes

  1. Using RGB images instead of CMYK
  2. No bleed area
  3. Low-resolution images (under 300 DPI)
  4. Missing fonts
  5. Text too close to the trim edge
  6. Not checking for overprint issues

Free Prepress Check

Not sure if your file is ready? Send it to us and our prepress team will review it at no charge. We check resolution, bleed, color mode, fonts, and overprint settings — then flag any issues before plates are made.
