Product overview
A cover message with space inside.
A greeting card uses a cover for the visual message and a folded interior for the personal one. A scored fold lets stiff card bend around a controlled hinge. The inside surface must accept the intended pen, while the envelope needs clearance for the folded card and any inserts. Foil and raised decoration also change thickness and mailing protection.

Folded presentation
The closed cover introduces the message while the opening provides a separate interior area.
Writable interior
An uncoated or compatible surface supports a handwritten message alongside the printed design.
Envelope pairing
The card, inserts and envelope form a presentation set with a defined finished fit.
Specifications & materials
Match the Folded Card to Its Envelope
Start with flat and folded width × height in mm; envelope size. Then compare the material and construction choices below.
Use these options to prepare your specification. Material grades, weights, thicknesses and feasible dimensions are confirmed for the quoted construction. A paper weight is not a finished thickness or a strength rating.
| Parameter | Options or Information to Supply | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Finished dimensions | A5 flat → A6-sized closed: 210 × 148 mm; A4 flat → A5-sized closed: 297 × 210 mm | Flat-sheet references; nominal panel divisions exclude crease, tuck and closing allowances. The approved layout determines finished size. |
| Format and component count | Panels, inserts and envelopes per set | One flat sheet carries both printed faces. Identify every outside and inside panel on the folded reading map. |
| Card stock | Coated, uncoated or specialty paper for review | Compare folding behavior and the required interior writing surface. |
| Decoration | Foil, embossing or selective finish where compatible | Keep finishing and scoring aligned; check detail on the chosen stock. |
| Envelope and inserts | Envelope paper, closure and inserts specified separately | Test the full card set inside the envelope, including any raised decoration. |

Keep the Fold Clean and the Interior Writable
Focus the review on crease appearance, pen performance and clearance inside the envelope.

01 / SELECTION CHECK
Treat the fold as a material check
Inspect scoring, grain and decoration near the crease on the selected stock. A heavier card or laminated face can require different evaluation from an uncoated folded sheet.
02 / SELECTION CHECK
Fit the full card set into the envelope
Assess the closed card with every insert, embellishment or separate message piece included. Check writing inside and closure without treating nominal card dimensions as proof of envelope fit.
Folded stationery planning
Match the crease, message orientation and envelope to the final card
Greeting cards combine a cover, an inside message and a reverse panel. Plan the reading orientation and envelope fit together; a score and a paper dummy help reveal cracking, spring-back and text placement near the fold.
Compare dimensions and usable space
Published reference formats with their selection notes.
A5 flat → A6-sized closed · 210 × 148 mm
Two nominal 105 × 148 mm panels form a compact greeting card; envelope fit follows the folded, decorated thickness.
Read every format’s selection note
- A5 flat → A6-sized closed: 210 × 148 mm. Two nominal 105 × 148 mm panels form a compact greeting card; envelope fit follows the folded, decorated thickness.
- A4 flat → A5-sized closed: 297 × 210 mm. Two nominal 148.5 × 210 mm panels allow a larger cover and writable message area before fold allowances.

Select the material by its finished behavior
For a folding sheet, compare coated 115 or 170 g/m² reference grades with an uncoated writing surface. A heavier sheet may need scoring and can change closing behavior. GSM measures mass per area, not caliper or foldability.

Production checks that prevent avoidable rework
Confirm the open and closed orientation
Label the cover, inside left, inside right and back in the flat file. Verify that the message reads upright after folding.
Select fold treatment for the stock
Heavy or coated stock may need scoring to reduce surface cracking at the crease. Test the selected stock and grain direction with a folded dummy.
Test the envelope as a finished set
Insert the folded card into the intended envelope and check fit, thickness, insertion and any liner or enclosure before approving pack-out.
Use-case selection
Choose a configuration for the job it has to do
Retail greeting card
Use a clear cover message, inside writing area and a standard envelope pairing chosen for the market.
Trade-off: A highly coated inside may resist common pens.
Corporate holiday card
Check names, logos, language versions and personalization data in the assembled proof.
Trade-off: Variable names require a controlled data approval and privacy process.
Invitation
Keep date, location, RSVP and accessibility details easy to locate inside the card.
Trade-off: A decorative insert can change envelope thickness and mailing cost.
Problem → cause → solution
Resolve the failure points before production
The spine cracks through dark print
Why it happens: The selected card and coating bend sharply without a suitable crease.
How to prevent it: Score the actual stock and inspect the printed hinge after folding; check grain direction and the finish across the fold.
The card jams in its envelope
Why it happens: Envelope fit was chosen from the flat artwork dimensions.
How to prevent it: Test the folded, decorated card with its inserts inside the intended envelope; check insertion and closure.

| Alternative | Structural difference | Selection trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Postcard | Single stiff sheet with exposed address side. | Simpler assembly; no private folded message area. |
Sampling & production
Choose a Sample That Answers Your Main Concern
A structural sample, a print proof and a finished sample answer different questions. Confirm the sample scope before approval. Free samples are prepared within 15 days; courier arrangements and transit time are separate.
Structure and material sample
Review card stock and decoration with the proposed dimensions and component count. Agree whether the sample uses production materials or substitutes. An unprinted construction sample does not approve printed color.
Print and artwork proof
Review representative artwork at finished size on the agreed proof condition. Check fine detail and important colors. A screen proof cannot establish physical feel or the performance of the finished assembly.
Complete finished sample
Assess crease appearance, pen performance and clearance inside the envelope with the specified components and finishing present. Record the approved revision and any differences to resolve before production.
How to Order Greeting Card
Send your project brief
Send flat and folded width × height in mm; envelope size. Specify panels, inserts and envelopes per set. State the number of complete card-and-envelope sets or cards only, per design, delivery destination and required arrival date. Tell us which options are undecided.
Compare the quotation
Ask for pricing by complete card-and-envelope sets or cards only, per design. Compare the same configuration at each quantity. The quotation should identify materials, finishing, sample scope, packing and freight, plus payment and order terms.
Review the right sample
Choose a sample that can demonstrate crease appearance, pen performance and clearance inside the envelope. Confirm what the free sample includes and any differences from the intended production specification. Preparation is completed within 15 days; courier arrangements and transit time are separate.
Approve the production version
Confirm the specification, file revision and sample decisions in writing. Production scheduling follows the agreed approvals and order release conditions; changes may require a revised quote or schedule.
Confirm packing and delivery
Protect folded edges and decoration from adjacent cards. Keep envelopes and inserts matched to each design, with complete-set counts stated on bundles. Agree the destination and shipping arrangement, with production, dispatch and transit dates listed separately.
Details to Confirm in the Quotation
- Order unit and price breaks
- Specify complete card-and-envelope sets or cards only, per design. Request the feasible minimum and quantity breaks for that exact configuration; a change of material, version or component count can change the price.
- Sample scope and delivery
- State whether you need a material trial, a print proof or a complete finished sample. Free samples are available, with preparation completed within 15 days. Confirm the included materials and processes; courier arrangements and transit time are separate.
- Approval and schedule
- State the required arrival date and whether versions ship together or to separate destinations. The quote must distinguish sample work, production and transit; a requested date is not a confirmed schedule.
- Packing and identification
- Protect folded edges and decoration from adjacent cards. Keep envelopes and inserts matched to each design, with complete-set counts stated on bundles.
- 01
Provide outside and inside faces with a clear fold orientation. Mark writing zones and decoration masks separately; identify inserts and the selected envelope format.
- 02
Use the PDF/X export preset and output condition confirmed with prepress. Embed fonts and identify the approved file revision.
- 03
Check continuous-tone images at about 300 effective pixels per inch (ppi) at their final placed size. Fine linework can require a different resolution or vector artwork.
- 04
Extend trim artwork by 3 mm unless the approved template specifies otherwise. Keep structural, folding and binding clearances separate from trim bleed.
- 05
Identify named spot colors or physical references and the intended substrate. Agree proof acceptance and keep finishing separations distinct. A screen PDF does not approve printed color.
Configuration details
Score the fold around the selected stock.
A folded card needs a controlled crease, especially when a dark print or laminate crosses the fold. Grain, coating and crease tooling act together. A clean-looking flat sheet cannot prove that the folded card will close without cracking or springing open.
- Dimensions
Flat and folded sizes stated separately
A 210 × 148 mm flat design folded once can form a 105 × 148 mm card; this is a layout example, not a tooling tolerance.
- Fold trial
Closed card on the actual finished stock
Inspect the outer crease, closing behavior and envelope insertion after all finishing.

Engineering & purchasing FAQ
Questions Before Ordering Greeting Card
Can a coated card still have a writable interior?
The interior surface must be specified and tested for that purpose. Compare the intended pen and any coating or film in the writing area. A finish chosen for the cover should not be assumed suitable inside.
How is a matching envelope sized?
Use the actual folded card thickness and include all inserts when checking clearance. Agree envelope dimensions and closure on the complete presentation sample rather than the flat artwork size.
Can several card designs share one envelope?
Yes, if their finished dimensions and assembled thickness fit the same envelope. List quantities by design and specify whether each card should be packed with its envelope.
Which sample should I request first?
Start with the uncertainty that could change the specification: crease appearance, pen performance and clearance inside the envelope. If the concern is physical, request the relevant material or functional sample. If it is print appearance, agree a suitable proof. Confirm the sample scope before approval. Free sample preparation is completed within 15 days; courier arrangements and transit time are separate.
How should I state quantities for a quote?
Use complete card-and-envelope sets or cards only, per design. Separate versions and give a delivery destination and required arrival date. This lets the quote distinguish the production quantity, packing and shipping scope.
